At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. (Matthew 18:1-5)
My heart is not proud, LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both now and forevermore. (Psalm 131)
Long, long ago (it seems, at least), I spent a year or so in preschool. My mom still loves to reminisce about when she’d come by the school in the afternoons to pick me up. I’d run to her at full speed, screeching “Mommy! MOMMY!” - absolutely ecstatic that she’d come for me, overwhelmingly eager just to be close to her again. To a parent, there’s nothing better than that, she always concludes with a smile.
I can only attempt to imagine how much it must delight God when we approach Him joyously, confidently, humbly, trustingly - like the children we are.
